About
Welcome! I’m Katherine Monahan. I grew up in Charlottesville, Virginia, and I just moved from Alabama to Chicago.
This is me:
I have a weird expression on my face because if I put the puppy down, it pees.
I live with Scott.
He’s a physicist. I was a lawyer in Manhattan, but now I write this humor and food blog, among other food and writing-related projects. I’m trying to figure out (again) what to be.
We have two dogs.
She’s a cross between a French and English bulldog. She’s about 1 1/2 years old.
And this is Seymour:
We think he’s Australian shepherd, maybe mixed with collie. He’s 3 months old. [Update: he’s now 50 lbs. and has eaten the couch he’s pictured on above.]
An eggton is what you get when you dump a bunch of croutons into a skillet of eggs. I discovered this at 2 o’clock one morning when a bag of herbed croutons fell into the omelet I was making. It was delicious because the croutons got warm and plump and the herbs melted into the eggs. You should probably try it.
I don’t have formal cooking or baking experience; I’ve just always enjoyed it. Also, I have no idea what I’m doing with the camera. But I can tell you it’s a Nikon D90 and I usually use a 50 mm lens.
I’m so glad you’re here. Email me any time at eggton.mail@gmail.com.

I really don’t know how I stumbled upon this blog, but it started on the one about the kid who WEEEEELLLLY WEEELLLLY needed stuff from a grocery store (which I enjoyed immensely. Almost as much as this About page.) And for the record, I laughed even harder after chatting it up with a four-year-old named Landon (at my local drugstore) about his dreams and Santa Claus. I hear there was such a thing as a subscribe button??? (wink) Would love to keep up with this foreshadowed craziness (grin).
–Madeleine
Madeleine!
I am so glad (and lucky) that you DID stumble here. Thanks for the kind words. I bet Landon’s dreams are HUGE, yes? What does he want to be when he grows up? You must blog about this (and for the record, I am looking forward to catching up on your posts.)
Do you mean “where is the freaking RSS button?” Arg. I need to figure that out, and pinterest, and a million other things. I have the good old “Want to get new posts from Eggton?” for subscribing by email on the right hand sidebar, if that’s an option in the meantime.
Cheers!
Oh if I only knew. The conversation was short, and we barely got past hello and the ritual showing of fingers regarding age. I didn’t have enough. (Thank you for checking out my posts! I try, and thanks to my grand imagination, I have a diverse following group of elves, burlesque dancers, men with nice facial hair, and tallow chandlers.)
WordPress gives a million options to get in touch and it’s quite the whirlwind. I am pretty sure I clicked at least five different options, so we are covered (much like a tampon commercial).
Hope all is well,
Madeleine
PS I love your dog. Consider her stolen.
Madeleine, it was only a matter of time before burlesque dancers, tampon commercials, and the distinction between nice and not nice facial hair was mentioned in these pages. I am kind of jealous that you got to it first. Bravo, my lady. Bravo.
To clarify, I love all facial hair.
This is the best and funniest blog ever. So glad I “stumbled” upon it. Can’t wait to read the future posts. Hope Alabama is good.
Grant
Thank you so much. That’s very kind of you. I am having so much FUN– I really am. Cheers!
I found you blog from @thebloggess. She is AWESOME! I am married to a corporate attorney and his humor is not nearly as great as yours. What is your secret ? Oh i know, you are no longer a corperate attorney. Ha. Please keep up the great work. It gives me hope about hubby quitting and finding his humor again.
Take care..
Ah, Julie– but I bet the husband looks very dapper in his corporate attorney outfit, right? And I bet he will have great stories from the firm holiday party if he stays out late enough, no? And I bet he’s not in a situation where he has better health insurance on his pet than he does on himself, eh? These are the trade-offs, you see, to quitting your attorney job and trying to find the funny. That’s why we must all continue to read the Bloggess and take it one day at a time. 🙂 Thank you for visiting! I am so glad you did. Take care.
Hi there! Just thought I’d let you know I also found you through The Bloggess and I think you’re delightful and funny 🙂 Will be subscribing.
Thanks and hope life is well!
Amanda, how very kind of you to say. Thank you so much for visiting! I hope all is well for you, too. Have a wonderful rest of December.
Thanks for “liking” my post! Your recipes sound delicious and your blog is hilarious, so I think I shall have to follow it!
Why hello, and thank you! But seriously, how could I not like penne a la vodka? The picture you posted made me want to have a third dinner. I mean second dinner. Nevermind.
🙂
Hi! Thanks so much for checking out my blog. Yours is my first comment from someone I don’t know. (Squeal!) I just checked out your two most recent posts and love your blog already. Following! Thanks again for stopping by, and happy New Year! P.S.: Your posts reminded me I need to add Pinterest links to my posts – good thinking.
Hello! I know EXACTLY what you mean and that is the best feeling, isn’t it? Horray!
I am an idiot about html, but let me know if you can’t figure out how to add the pinterest link to your posts– if you google “Pinterest goodies” you’ll get a page that shows you how to do it.
Thanks for following– I look forward to reading your material, too.
Must say . . . I am quickly becoming obsessed with your blog. I have literally “snortled” aloud whilst reading your posts. I *may* have even had a coworker ask if I was choking while I attempted to refrain from spraying coffee on my screen, mid-guffaw, during the Stalker Eggshell Necklace discussion with Scott that preceded your stop at the Christmas-saving unclaimed luggage depot.
Thanks for making my day have more smiles, and, well, if I am honest . . . coffee stains. Keep it up . . . Please! 🙂
Annie! You have returned the smiles two times over with your kind message. Thank you! I am having a blast writing it, and it’s probably healthy to get these stories out into the world so that everyone knows the risks of traveling without hard-boiled eggs and chocolate chip cookies. We need to look out for each other, you know? For example, I can also pass along to you that I am reading Tina Fey’s book, Bossypants, and it’s so funny that I have decided to wear all brown today. Coffee stain problem solved. Take care and thanks again.
Aha! I knew there was a book that needed to be recommended to me today. Tip o’ the hat! And the all brown? Another good tip! And one that might help me look less funereal than my incessant all-black ensembles do (which I prefer to think read more “beatnik” or “artist,” but The Husband Who Thinks He Speaks For The Masses argues that point with gusto). To you and Ms. Fey, I say huzzah!
Hello 🙂
I’m so happy you like my post, it made me discover yours.. Amazing recipes -that I might borrow some time 😉 – if I may 🙂 & an amazing style of writing as well..
Best Regards
Hi Cloud of Lace! I shot you an email to your blog email, but in case you don’t check that often, here is my official response 🙂
Thanks! So glad you visited. I’m flattered you’d want to try some of the recipes.
Recipes aren’t copyrighted so you can use any of the recipes themselves. Go for it!
But because the photos (and the rest of the content) are protected by copyright and Eggton is protected by trademark, you just have to shoot me an email asking before you borrow a picture and post it on your site. (Even if you plan to attribute a photo to the original blogger by hyperlinking, copyright law requires that you ask permission first.) I’ll probably say yes, we just have to go through the process of emailing. Cool? Thanks for bearing with me.
Happy blogging to you,
Katherine
Love your blog. I also live in Alabama. Glad you liked my recipe. Visit soon
Ann
Horray for Alabama! I love your gingered beef recipe. You’ve got some good stuff going on over there!
Glad you found my blog so that I could find yours 🙂 And wouldn’t you know it that I’ve always dreamed of having an english bulldog?! I’m pretty much obsessed. But for now it’s only a hypothetical obsession, mainly involving looking up breeder contact info a lot and bookmarking pages that I’ll never be able to use in the foreseeable future since I’m a poor person.
Hello there, ahh yes, I struggled with that too. They can be so expensive! I was in New York when I got her and the breeders there were charging an arm and a leg. My mom eventually found Thunder in Virginia– she’s a cross between an English and a French and I think she’s SO much healthier because of it. She was a lot more reasonable. It’s hard because you don’t often find bulldogs in shelters. I waited years to get her, and I did exactly what you’re doing in the meantime. Best of luck to you– be in touch when the time comes and I’d love to help in any way I can.
AHHHH! My bully Mingus is a French English mix! He is around 45-50 lbs and a complete terror!!! Lol, I wuv him to pieces… but he is one baaaadddd baby 🙂 How big did Thunder get?
Aw. The boxer rescue on your website (Robbie) looks adorable. He’s a puppy, right?
Wow, Mingus got big, then! Thunder is almost 1 year old, and she’s 30 lbs (maybe because her mom was the english one, and her dad the french–do you know about Mingus?) She’s stayed at 29-30 lbs. for several months, so I think that’s what we’re looking at, unless you’re going to tell me that Mingus kept growing after a year! How’d you find him? I am worried that French/English mixes are pretty rare, and I wish they weren’t. Did obedience classes help Mingus? Ours was a HUGE help (not that she doesn’t still eat the couch.)
I am not sure, I adopted Mingus from a local shelter when he was around a year and a half… his previous owners gave him the boot for the funky rash on his belly. They thought it was Ringworm, turns out he is just allergic to certain types of grass. A nip of benadryl and all is right with the world 🙂
I think your right, and that is sooo why I got excited when I saw your Thunder. She is the third FB/EB mix I have come across (there was one about a year back with a bulldog rescue in California).
Sigh, dear sweet Mingus… basic obedience, advanced obedience, daily walks, super tough chewies… he is in CONSTANT motion 🙂 I have been blessed to share my life with both French and English Bulldogs… but nothing prepared me for the mixing of breeds 🙂 PERSONALITY! PERSONALITY! PERSONALITY!
Amy, first of all– I can’t believe they gave him up just for the belly rash! All for the better, though, since now he’s with you. Wow, it sounds like you’ve put a lot of time into the training. We need to do more of it because when we’re in the back yard, Thunder rarely comes inside when you call her. She just sits there with a stick at her feet and she literally looks up to the sky and over he shoulder, like a kid who got called on in class and is trying to pretend he didn’t hear it. It’s hilarious/SUPER ANNOYING.
Oh, and Robbie is a young adult 🙂
Hi
I have nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award because I love what you do! http://pureandsimplebakes.com/
xx 🙂
Nancy, thank you! I am so honored. The only thing better would be if this kind gesture of yours also came with an unlimited supply of those brownie bites you’ve been making over there. They look so delicious. Thank you again!
you’re welcome 🙂 I absolutely love your blog! 🙂 It’s definitely worthy of a whole wagon load of brownie bites! 🙂
Great blog! I love your writing style. Looking forward to reading more of your posts. Does your dog eat underwear? My dog , cornbread, loves it! Maybe the two should go on a socks and undies play date 😉 Oh wait, you live in Alabama- bummer 😦
My dog DOES eat underwear. She can’t destroy mine as easily, but she can sure rip Scott’s boxers to shreds. It really put a damper on our awesome habit of twirling our underwear around over our heads and shooting lingerie across the room. Now we have to use the laundry basket. BORING.
Great blog. Happy to find you. Aloha.
Why thank you! Aloha to you too!
A drunken chef creating dishes at 2:00 AM? Who owns a bulldog? With a sense of humor? Nice!
Hello there! March 2 was a busy day around here and I’m just now seeing this kind note from you.
Did you actually do that watercolor you posted on March 28?! It’s really good!
This is fantastic. Absolutely fantastic.

Ms. Teacher, thank you so much. What a kind comment. It means a lot to me.
beyond words
Hey there! I see from your site that you’re from Colorado. Some days I really wish I lived there. I think everyone in this household would love it. I will hit you up for info if we ever make it out there!
please do my friend. We made the move here 5 years ago and there’s no looking back.
love that little doggy of yours. Passed the meatball soup recipe to the wife, we will love that!
So doggone adorable! I love everything about your blog so I’m nominating you for a Sunshine Award! No doubt not your first, but know I love what you do!
Sarah, this is so nice of you! Thank you—it’s so thoughtful and put a big smile on my face.
Aww! Scratch behind your ears for you! 🙂
Hello, Eggton. You don’t know me, but I’ve found you in bloggerworld, and I have bestowed upon you the Kreativ Blogger Award: http://bringingeuropehome.com/
Should you decide to accept this, the rules are concisely stated on my site. I do enjoy your humor, your recipes, and your photography. Well done.
Hello there! Thank you so very much for taking the time to do that. It’s really nice of you and I’m very grateful that you enjoyed stopping by here. Sorry for the delay in this reply. I’m just reading your post about Easter eggs and it looks like you had such a wonderful time decorating them with your children. We haven’t done and yet but we will! We surely will. Take care,
Katherine
You’re welcome, Katherine, and now that you’ve said that I realize that I did not leave the correct link for you. (I’m fairly new and woefully inept at this blogging thing!) If you’d like the image to post and the rules for spreading the love, try this: http://bringingeuropehome.com/2012/03/15/good-newsbad-news-day/. If not, at least you know that you can count me as one of your fans. 🙂
Love your blog! Found it recently and I have thoroughly enjoyed clicking through old posts. Thunder is just the cutest! May I ask what breed she is? I have been seriously considering getting a french bulldog, although I don’t know if I could find any dog as cute as Thunder!
— just discovered she’s a mix between a french and english, thought I’d send my compliments anyway!!
Hi there! Yeah, she’s a mix between the two and I think she’s a lot healthier for it. She’s super athletic like a frenchie but bigger than a frenchie, and she looks less like a pug than frenchies do (to me at least). She’s got a pretty healthy nose/breathing situation, which is wonderful, and we haven’t had any other big problems yet, which is something I worried about when I considered getting a full-on English bulldog.
Anyway, thank you! I’m so glad you stopped by. Take care!
so happy to have stumbled upon your blog! bloody brilliant, you just had me laughing at the screen for a good 5 minutes. and really admire your guts for quitting your job as an attorney and doing something you love and enjoy, that’s been really inspiring for someone fretting about life after uni.
Um, so MONTHS later I saw this and wanted to say thank you so much for reading it and for the very kind words.
Have you decided what to do after uni? What are your options and what do you enjoy doing most during the day? Take care!
For all the joys and laugh out loud humour, for all the crazy adventures and wonderful recipes and all the Thunderisims…you are the best and you are the brightest streak of light in sunshine brigade 🙂
http://madcaphat.wordpress.com/2012/04/16/bring-on-the-sunshine
Oh my goodness, thank you so much! I’m so honored. What kind words to share with me. *Thank you.
*p.s. I love going away to the mountains, too. I really enjoyed that post of yours. 🙂
The thanks come right back to you 🙂
P.S. we should plan a mountain trip together and take Thunder along…do you think she will be amenable to the idea?
I love this blog, I especially enjoy your recipes and your humorous take on things. I nominated you for an award too 🙂 http://myyearinquotes.wordpress.com/
Tieran, thank you! It’s very kind. I hope you are doing great!

Thanks for being awesome =)
Hey Christina! Thank you so much. I love your site.
Hey Eggton! I nominated YOU for a Liebster Award because I like your blog a lot! And then I posted this on your page and noticed you have lots of followers and are possibly even drowning in awards. So oops, sorry, but thanks anyway for writing…
If you’re not totally yawning with the prospect, part of the award is for you to nominate eleven other bloggers with fewer than 200 followers, to answer eleven questions, and ask eleven more…
See here for details. http://skinnylittlewhippet.wordpress.com/2012/11/30/liebsters-jeibsters/
Whoooot! Thank you so much! I really do appreciate it.
Freshly pressed brought me here, and wow….I can’t wait to come back again {and again}. A mom of three, I think your blog is going to come in very handy and make me laugh at the same time, which I need, since I am also a recovering attorney.
You are a *really* good writer, my friend. Very glad you came here because otherwise I might not have found your site, which is wonderful.
Thank you Emily for liking my Blog, as it has given me a chance to return the favour 🙂 Friends in Food – Love your story about your grand mothers ice cubes 🙂 Roslyn

Aw, thank you so much! This is kind of you.
Your comment on Movita’s blog drew me here. Wow! I feel very late to the party..but if you are still accepting guests, I think I’ll be dropping in regularly! 🙂
Sharon, I’m so glad. Thank you for the kind words. Isn’t movita’s blog the best?!? I love it.
Hi, just to let you know that I nominated you for a Sunshine Award as I have been really enjoying your blog. http://barktime.wordpress.com/2013/04/27/sunshine-award/ Best wishes Agata via Bark Time
Agata, thank you so much! This is very kind of you and I really appreciate it.
You are more than welcome 🙂
Love the food, the pictures, the words, but really obsessed with thunder (though seymour is beautiful as well) we have a 7 month old english bulldog (huxley) and I am obsessed with him as well. I’m really glad to have stumbled upon this blog!!
I’m so glad you commented, because I loved looking through your blog just now! I bet Huxley is adorable. Thunder at 7 months was a sight to behold. (She also ate a couch cushion, if I recall correctly.)
I’m jealous that you live in Southern California, with all its amazing produce–I’ll keep reading your site for sure!
Thanks so much for stopping by my blog and for your kind words!! I’ll have to snap a few begging shots next time around. It’s incredible how they eat just about anything. Huxley (not so incredibly) ate an entire container of rat poison at a friend’s house this weekend. Thankfully he is ($600 dollars later) absolutely fine. I feel the experience was much more traumatizing for me then it was for him. Looking forward to following your blog, cheers!
You know, I got health insurance on Thunder when I first got her. It didn’t cover spaying, but it does really take a load off my mind about the idea of a major surgery that could cost thousands of dollars (God forbid.) Bulldogs can have health problems, you know? So I went for it. I’m SO glad Huxley is okay. What a nightmare that must have been for you! We’ve been there–not with rat poison but with our seemingly deadly back yard (wild mushrooms, random berries that made her sick, bumble bees that made her face swell up like you would not believe, etc.) At 2 years old now she doesn’t really go around eating stuff anymore (which I should be enjoying, but then. . . . we got another puppy and started the whole process all over again. 🙂 So glad to be in touch with you!
Your blog is great fun, and how could I resist the gravatar and the dogs, lovely pups, thanks, Tracey
I’m so glad a came across your blog. It’s more than great! Can’t wait to follow it and find recipes that I can make. 🙂 xo
Found this blog and love it! It gives me hope that someone with no formal training and cooking or photography can do both, as you do such a wonderful job! I look forward to reading your posts.
Hi Katherine, I nominated you for a blogger award!! Say hi to Thunder and Seymour for me!
http://itypecrazyfast.wordpress.com/
~Gina
I just stumbled across your blog via the “Recommended” list on WordPress. (I just started a cooking blog of my own and am looking for other like-minded folks.) Most of them were by REAL, trained gourmet chefs and were a little stuffy. So I was thrilled to find another irreverant soul on here. And then I saw comments from other followers of thebloggess who also love the blog and I thought, “That’s it! Adding to my list!”
Being a fellow Alabama cook didn’t hurt, either! So I may be late to the party, but at least I found it now!
Amanda
Amanda, I’m so glad you made it over here! Congrats on starting your website. It looks great! Isn’t it so much fun??
Where in Alabama do you live? I just left Huntsville and moved to Chicago. I miss it (especially in winter, let me tell you).
Thanks for the kind words. And I look forward to following The Fake Gourmet!
I am in Florence, so we were practically neighbors! But winter hasn’t been awesome here this year either — last week we were 64 hours below freezing, with wind chills near zero. Does not go well with my thin Southern blood, let me tell you!
Hey! Would you mind if I share your blog with my zynga group?
There’s a lot of folks that I think would really enjoy your content.
Please let me know. Cheers
Of course!
Dear Katherine, like I said in my post http://noemieskitchen.com/2014/09/23/one-lovely-blog-award/ I find your blog hilarious and I love reading it. Maybe one day if you come to London to visit Wenying I might have the chance to actually meet you! In the meantime, I nominate you for One Lovely Blog Award! I saw you’ve been nominated for many others so here is another one for your incredible blog. All the best for the baby, Noemie.
Noemie, thank you so, so much! This is very kind of you.
This is a very impressive blog! I see that you are a lawyer (I enjoyed the copyright section). I’m a law student in Canada, and many of my classmates and I enjoying cooking, especially Italian food because it is a great way to get out minds off of schoolwork, especially when it gets overwhelming. Eating well keeps us all healthy and happier. I just launched a blog about my passion for Italian food, especially growing up with Italians “nonnas.” This is great work! LOVE the humour I’m your blog …haha we write humour with an extra “u” up here in Canada.
Cheers!
Just discovered your blog. I love your sense of humor. Good luck with the impending motherhood. It will be wild for a while.
Nice to meet you Katherine! Love your pooches and how you got the name of your blog! I need to try this eggton! 😉 Best, Koko❀
Thank you so much, Koko!
